Preparing for Dorm Life

If you’ve just graduated from high school and you’re beginning to prepare for your first year at college, you’re probably a little nervous and uneasy. It’s hard to know what to expect. Many questions are weighing on your mind. What will your roommate be like? Will you get along? Are you going to be homesick? It’s good that you have questions, because college will be a whole new chapter in your life, so you want to be as mentally prepared for dorm life as possible. While you can’t completely plan out this new experience, there are a few things you can do to make the transition a little easier.

Before heading off to school, make sure you take a tour of the campus. It’s best if you can visit your new school at least a couple of times before moving there. The first trip should be formal with a tour, and then on your next couple of visits make it a point to get to know the campus on a more personal level. Walk around and find the closest coffee shop to your dorm, glance through the library and find your classes if you’ve made your schedule already.

Around a month before you are about to start school, you should start packing up your things. You’ll want to make sure you have a check list of the essentials so that you don’t leave anything. You’ll of course need to pack clothing for various weather conditions, you’ll need toiletries and you may need furniture. If your dorm requires that you bring your own furniture, you should try your best to purchase furniture that will optimize the space of your dorm room. In general dorms tend to be extremely small, so you may want to look at bunk beds with desk.

A couple of weeks before you are about to leave for school, see if you get in contact with your roommates. Most colleges will at least have the names of your roommates listed along with their email addresses. Take the time to send them a quick email about yourself. You can also take a look at them on Facebook. Making a connection with them early on will smooth the transition and it will be less uncomfortable to meet them for the first time.
