Back in the ’90s, there was no question as to whether a masters in business administration ( MBA ) was worth the investment. The sticker price of your typical two-year program was substantially lower, graduates were fewer, and it was seen as the gilded passport to a quick climb up the career ladder and a six-figure salary. Now, however, the cost is prohibitive, and the recent abundance of MBA grads has led some to argue that the luster of the degree has been tarnished by oversupply. So what is the ROI of an MBA , and is it still worth it? How much will it cost vs. how much will I make? Even with financial aid, any masters program is going to put a significant dent in your bank account and will likely saddle you with debt for years after you leave campus. But costs vary wildly by school, and there are still some respected programs out there that are much more affordable than others (plus, some of the more generous financial aid can cover about half of the tuition fees). For example, University of Chicago’s MBA program costs over $150,000 (not including accommodation and other living costs), but according to Bloomberg ‘s most recent roundup, graduates make an average of $102,000 per year when they get out. At Harvard, tuition and fees come to about $112,000, and graduates end up making $110,000 on average, while the less well-known Brigham Young University (Utah) MBA program costs just $41,120 (half that if you’re Mormon, by the way) and earns graduates an average of $88,550 per annum on graduation. If you’re worried about loans, it’s worth considering that part-time MBAs may offer a better return on investment. Part-time students can usually work at the same time, paying their own way (or obtaining sponsorship from their companies) rather than taking out crippling loans. Hard numbers and value for money It’s a sad fact that although you may be trailing the pack without one, the value of a masters degree in general is a fraction of what it was in the past — less than $400,000 over 30 years (with no financial aid) according to Bloomberg . The drop can be attributed to lower bonuses, recent grads opting for lower-paying positions in a stalled job market, and previously high-earning employees laid off and working lower-paying jobs. Choose wisely, though, and you’ll be making the best investment of your life. For example, a low-cost school with a high rate of return could have you looking at a 30-year ROI of more than $1.8 million (at the California Institute of Technology, for example). For the best ROI on an MBA, however, the hard numbers say heading abroad is your best bet. At the top of the list, the IE Business School in Madrid, Spain, costs around $150,000 for the full MBA program, but graduates earn a whopping $96,500 per year in increased salary, so the degree cost is recouped in less than two years. The same can be said for the Cranfield School of Management, Manchester Business School and Cambridge in the UK, which all offer MBA degrees resulting in a $50,000 pay increase after graduation, meaning total costs are recouped in three years. Other smart investments abroad include IESE in Barcelona, HEC in Paris and IMD business school in Switzerland (courses taught in English). More on the ROI of an MBA, next…

Day by day, we came across the news of companies being wound up in retrenchment. Even if many banks have to close down, yet there are a host of offshore bank accounts that are in operation and still running successfully. Thanks to the offshore banking where you can open an offshore bank account without the fears of bureaucracy and with a minimum amount you can transact for the offshore banking account. Above all, the major and good companies provide you maximum security by keeping your identity in secrecy, offering you higher interest rates on your deposits and that without applying taxes!

Help your kids financially overseas -
In this world of globalisation people seem to travel across countries for business, study or travel. In this sense opening an offshore bank account is always beneficial. Hence, you may want to send your kids overseas to study and with your offshore bank account it will be helpful for them in withdrawing the money to pay for their tuition fees or meeting there living expenses. Here, you need not to lose your hard-earned money owing to the exchange rates that are fluctuating every now and then. The bottom line is you can put the required amount into the offshore bank account so that he can withdraw as much money as they want by using an ATM card.
Conduct your business with liberalisation -

As we know that the people who open the offshore bank account are the parents who want to give a contribution to their kids, studying overseas or the account holders may be the students under scholarships. Apart from this, it is a must for the businessmen to open an offshore bank account in order to conduct their business traveling from country to the country, meeting with clients, arranging and attending meetings and so on. If you want to do some business in a foreign country, you may require an offshore bank account so that you can receive payments for your consultation work or offered services. The offshore banking allows you to transactions like withdrawing the amount for daily expenditure and depositing money. The worth-mentioning thing is that you can check via internet banking how much interest you have earned whereby you can put it into fixed deposits for higher rates.

Ponder on the pros and cons before taking the final decision -
A piece of advice is worth-following that you need to conduct a good research on offshore banking before you actually decide on opening your account. The flip side is even though offshore customer services can be accessed 24×7 days through mails or telephonic calls, yet there are times when the real customer service proves helpful, especially you need to be clearer about a particular service. The importance and need of the offshore banking are unchallengeable.

I was able to go through the MBA fair at full throttle in order to find out as much as I could about the available schools.Almost two years later, the Kenyan MBA candidate is living in Hungary and studying for an MBA with a finance specialization, one of his key criteria for an MBA program. “I was interested in a finance specialization but one that would have more than the bottom line as mantra,” he says.Ochieng says international degrees from reputable schools are always well regarded in his home country of Kenya. “A lot of respect is earned as it denotes a quality education. However, it places a greater challenge on the degree holder to prove that they are better than their local counterpart. Many people view their degrees as an international passport to go and recoup their return on investment wherever they can, depending on their perceived worth.”

Passing the GMAT Getting into the MBA classroom has its challenges. There’s the GMAT to pass, the MBA essays to write and the admissions interviews to survive, but Ochieng took them all in his stride.Writing the MBA essays was a tough but necessary assignment. It enabled me to take stock of the lessons learned through work and interaction and to have a very good idea about what I wanted to achieve in the long term, and the milestones to be achieved in the short to medium term,” Ochieng says. “It is important to be very clear about your goals and how the mosaic of events in the present will help to achieve them. My essay, in my view, brought this out clearly. Preparing for the GMAT required just as much preparation. “Firstly I spoke to those who had done their MBAs, both locally and abroad, to find out whether it had benefited them or not,” Ochieng recalls. “Their experiences provided an indicator of the level of commitment that would be required to complete the process successfully. “With that out of the way, it was necessary to assess the application process, which required the GMAT to be taken. The GMAT requires a good level of preparation. Practicing with the sample exams is a good way to gauge oneself and improve one’s chances of success.” MBA funding “Financing an MBA is a significant investment, just like buying a house or getting seed money to start a business,” Ochieng says. “It is easy to suffer massive hair loss as you crunch the numbers on how to make it work. “If lucky, you will have saved enough to pay for the whole course but those are exceptional cases. You must draw to your resources and that of family and other areas, like bank loans.” Ochieng also advises other MBA candidates to look through potential business school’s online information pages to check for opportunities, such as management scholarships and other methods of MBA funding. “I received a partial scholarship from CEU Business School that helped offset my tuition costs, and was also awarded the Robert Oldham Scholarship.
One, however, should not despair at the price tag [of an MBA], but instead think about what the effort will bring in the long run. It is definitely worth the shot.”

The 2011 Minority Student Leadership Conference at Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers a chance for minority students to learn, share and celebrate their heritage.

The theme of the conference, set for March 31 at the Student Center, is “Building On Our Legacy, Meeting Global Challenges.” Event coordinators are the Southern Illinois University Collegiate Chapter of the NAACP and Blacks Interested in Business, a registered student organization.

The organizations are extending the welcome mat particularly to all minority students including African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans, women and the disabled. There is no cost to attend but students must pre-register by March 22. The registration form is online at www.mslc.siuc.edu .

“This event is a full day of empowerment, enrichment and celebration of minority people. It is geared toward students and honors their accomplishments and what others who have gone before them have achieved,” said Michael Haywood, director of the Office of Minority Affairs in the College of Business and academic adviser for the Blacks Interested in Business.

The conference begins with registration 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the John Corker Lounge and includes breakfast, a luncheon, workshops and interactive presentations participants can attend as well as an awards presentation. It all wraps up with a 3:30 p.m. panel discussion. The event’s purpose is to enhance corporate practices, leadership skills, communication strategies, financial management skills and outreach initiatives along with helping participants achieve personal and professional skills development needed to leverage existing diversity initiatives, Haywood said.

“The goals of the MSLC are to enhance student development and student knowledge by encouraging underrepresented students through the use of well designed workshops. The MSLC will give students the opportunity to interact with former Blacks Interested in Business and colleagues from a variety of business entities. From the field to the classroom, the conference is designed to educate students and help them utilize the knowledge they gain, presenting them with valuable information through idea-sharing, panel discussions and workshops,” Haywood said.

The workshop topics cover a wide range of themes, including preparing a business plan, personal finance, the power of networking, creating high-quality resumes, starting a business, leadership, health and wellness, workplace diversity, business communication and more.

The luncheon will celebrate the University’s long history of diversity inclusion. Plans call for recognizing the first black graduate of the College of Business, Walter Clark in 1961, and the 42nd year for the Blacks Interested in Business RSO. Crystal Kuykendall and Kenneth Brown are the keynote speakers for the conference.

Kuykendall, a Chicago native, earned her bachelor’s in government at SIUC, her master’s in sociology at Montclair State University in New Jersey and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. With considerable teaching and leadership experience, she is an author, attorney, founder of Kreative and Innovative Resources for Kids and a popular motivational speaker. She’ll present the luncheon keynote address.

Brown, presenter of the breakfast keynote address, was born in Chicago to teenage parents. He worked his way through SIUC as a bus boy and waiter, graduating in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, and went on to become one of the youngest African-American owner/operators of a McDonald’s franchise. The author of “A Leap of Faith” and “L.I.F.E. — Living in Freedom Everyday,” Brown travels the country as a life coach and speaker, sharing his story and his business expertise.

The event will also include the announcement of three new minority scholarships, each carrying a $1,000 annual award to SIUC students. The new scholarships, all established by SIUC College of Business alumni, include:

• The Douglas E. Kelly Memorial Scholarship, named for the late accountant and IRS employee.

• The Janaya D. Tucker Scholarship established by Tucker (bachelor’s in accounting 2007, MBA in 2008), an associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Chicago.

• The Marquita Vines Scholarship, established by Marquita Vines, a 2008 MBA graduate and Saluki track team competitor.

There will also be awards for several College of Business alumni. Awards being presented include:

• Ralph G. Moore of Chicago, Blacks Interested in Business Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award the group gives, commemorating a lifetime of leadership and significant achievements.

• Larry D. Bailey of Washington, D.C., Blacks Interested in Business Global Business Award, presented in recognition of success with a worldwide initiative or for contributions of global proportions.

• Les Hale of Springfield, Business Achievement Award from the Blacks Interested in Business, an award recognizing outstanding accomplishments and excellence in the business world and service community.

• Carol Henry of Carbondale, the College of Business Minority Alumni Achievement Award, an award for an alum who excels and succeeds in his or her field.
