Are you someone whose parents won’t pay for college? If so, there are thousands of college students in the same boat as you, struggling to pay for a higher education by themselves.

Luckily, there are several options available to help college students have enough money to get through each semester.

1) Take out student loans. Although this puts you into debt, the interest rates are generally very low and this gives you more time to focus on your studies.

Student loans are probably the most common way that students pay for college themselves, but the problem is it sets them up with a repayment schedule that can take years to completely pay off!

2) Get a part time job. There are lots of options here, since you’re not in high school anymore and have proven your intelligence (somewhat anyways!)

Here’s a few very common part time jobs that college students whose parents won’t pay for college find themselves in:

-Waiting tables bartending. This can be a fun job depending on where you work, and you can also make some pretty good money. The main problems with this job is that to make the best money you have to work weekends, you’re on your feet all day, and some people are really cheap with their tips.

-Jobs on campus, such as administrative assistants. You’ll probably find these jobs to have flexible hours, decent pay, and your boss may even let you do your homework if things are slow! I always liked getting paid to do my homework, it’s not a bad gig.

-Retail jobs such as Home Depot or Best Buy. Not always the most glamorous, but you can make decent money doing this and get some great discounts (in case you ever have money left over after Friday night). You’re on your feet a lot though, and should be able to work well with people.

-Special event companies. These companies rent out equipment such as large inflatables, casino equipment, or make the food at large corporate events. It’s a pretty fun job, but if you help with setup and strike (cleaning up) then it can be fairly tough physically.

-Temp agencies. These places can find you all sorts of jobs, and if you’re in college and are actually willing to be at work on time and do a good job, they LOVE you. The problem with these is the agency usually takes a cut of your paycheck off the top from you… like 50% sometimes.

Besides student loans and getting a part time job, you have one more option-

3) Start a small company yourself. Some require very low (or no) startup costs, so the money you make is profit rather than repaying a business loan or your grandma.

-Tutoring is very easy, and requires absolutely no startup costs. Just start asking around campus, or advertise your tutoring business on Craigslist or other free sites. You could even put posters around the campus.

-Landscaping and painting are easy to do, and you can generally get started with a few hundred bucks. You can have a pretty high profit margin with these, the trick is learning how to estimate costs and value your time.

-Start an online business, such as a blog or affiliate marketing. This is my personal favorite, as it gives you the most flexibility, highest income potential, and lets you learn skills you can take with you for the rest of your life.

People are spending billions of dollars online each year, and there’s a way you can have a piece of that pie! This isn’t the easiest method of making money, as it will require some hard work and a huge learning curve. The cool thing is that once you’ve got it down, you’ll see some serious money coming in.

Those are the best 3 ways to make money in case your parents won’t pay for college. I personally recommend starting your own business online, but it’s not for everyone. Whatever you choose, good luck with it!
