College scholarships and grants provide a series of additional options for funding your college education. These are better options, if you can get them, as they do not have to be repaid, the way student loans do.

As you consider how to pay for college, the very first place to start is with college grants and scholarships. Unlike student loans, grants and scholarships generally do not have to be repaid. There are billions of dollars of grants and scholarships available from hundreds of thousands of organizations the key is doing your research and starting early.

Grants are based on a combination of financial need, and in some cases, academic performance. For example, the Federal Pell Grant offers up to $4,050 (for the 2006-07 school year) depending on your financial need and the cost of attendance at your school. Applying for the Pell Grant and other federal grants is done through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or the FAFSA, which is a free financial aid form. Your FAFSA results, called the Student Aid Report (SAR), will inform you if you’re eligible for a Pell Grant, and for how much. Other grants controlled by the FAFSA include the Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant, the National SMART Grant, and the Academic Competitiveness Grant.

College scholarships are another source of funds for education that don’t have to be repaid. They are typically offered to students who meet specific requirements, and are typically funded by private benefactors. Though many scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit or financial need, not all are. Some scholarships are random drawings, while others have requirements designed to focus on improving access to specific demographics, like minorities or certain fields of study.

There are millions of need- and merit-based scholarships worth over $10 billion. There are many websites listing scholarships – StudentScholarshipSearch.com currently has over $7 billion scholarships available for visitors. In addition to the Internet, meet with your high school guidance counselor who may have a list of local scholarship opportunities.

It is important to research these student scholarships early since many require an application and/or interview. Although you will not apply for college until you are a senior in high school, start to research scholarships in your sophomore or junior year. This will allow you to identify potential scholarships and give you time to meet all the qualification criteria. Be as specific as possible – the more targeted your search, the less competition you will have from other applicants and the more likely you are to stand-out to the organization providing the scholarship. For more details about how to search effectively, read the free Scholarship Search Secrets e-Book available at StudentScholarshipSearch.com.

Apply for as many college scholarships as possible – there is no limit and every dollar of scholarship funds you accrue will limit your need of student loans. Many scholarships require you to submit an application and/or participate in an interview, so be sure you qualify for the scholarship before applying. Try to set a specific time each week to apply for at least two scholarships – every Sunday afternoon, for example. In a year’s time, you will have applied for over 100 scholarships.

Another key fact often overlooked is that in the end, what matters most is how much scholarship money you have been awarded, whether it comes from a single scholarship for $1,000, or 10 scholarships for $100 each. Apply for large and small scholarships alike; the larger the scholarship, the more competition there likely is for it, so you may find in your search that applying for many smaller scholarships will improve your chances of being awarded money.

One last word of caution – be sure to avoid scholarship scams. Typical signs of scholarship scams include asking for very detailed personal information, such as a Social Security number or date of birth. Any scholarship award that asks you to pay money of any dollar amount is likely not legitimate. Awards which require you to give any kind of financial information such as bank account numbers or credit card numbers are almost certainly scams. Receiving a notice that you’re a finalist in a scholarship you never applied for is almost certainly a scam. Generally speaking, scholarship search services, while not necessarily scams, don’t offer value above and beyond what a search engine like Google can provide, so it’s usually not worth paying for them. Above all else, trust your gut instincts – if something feels like a scam, it probably is.

When trying to determine how a person will fund their college education there are several options that a potential student should learn about and carefully consider. Generally there are scholarships available to students who are still in high school. There are also private loans that the parents of a student may apply for and fund personally. There are student loans available through private lenders and organizations that a student will typically need their parents to co-sign for, as well as federally funded student loans. For qualifying students, a federal Pell Grant may be a viable option, as this financial aid instrument is superior to most of the aforementioned options.

Federal Pell Grants are issued when a student can demonstrate the appropriate financial need for additional funding to attend college. Students who are under the age of twenty-five and have typically lived with their parents, are not married, and do not have children are usually considered dependent students. These students will need to submit information on their application regarding their own income, as well as the income of their parents if they want to demonstrate the proper financial need to qualify for a Pell Grant.

Those who have not typically been a dependent of their parents, under the age of twenty-five with children, have been classified as a run-away, or have been homeless in recent years are typically considered to be a non-dependent. They will need to submit information in regards to their own income and if applicable, the income of their spouse. To help determine dependency status, a dependency status worksheet is available. The worksheet will ask questions in regards to income and family and marital status in addition to previous living situations.

The potential student will need to complete a FAFSA form online or submit a paper application through the mail or to the school’s financial aid department. A student who is in default on other federal loans or grants may not be able to satisfy the outlined Pell Grant qualifications for that school year. It is recommended that a student apply for a Pell Grant at least 10 weeks before a semester is due to start. Pell Grants are set a maximum yearly amount per student, and funds are issued on a first come, first serve basis.

Although higher education is important, there are often a number of obstacles that can hinder potential students from enrolling in college. Family obligations and financial concerns are often at the top of this list, especially when it relates to single mothers. Obama grants meant to encourage mothers to return to college to earn a degree attempt to ease some of the concerns associated with going to college. In a number of cases, the purpose of federal grants is to help disadvantaged groups to attend college. A commonly given endowment for low-income students is the federal Pell grant. As the Obama administration has stated that it places a high priority on education, the benefits of Pell grants have been augmented in order to be a greater help to potential students. Working moms are especially encouraged to apply for the Scholarships for Moms program, which is just a title given to a portion of the standard Pell grant program. By equipping low-income mothers to earn a degree, the administration believes that this will provide a stimulus to the lagging economy, and be a great benefit to the families of those mothers, by increasing their earning power in the work force. $5,000 from a Pell grant may not seem like a lot of money, when you look at the high cost of education these days, but it should help defray the other expenses associated with going to college.

As well as books and supplies, a student has additional expenses of housing and travel as well. Childcare costs for a single mom, may also be included in these miscellaneous expenses. A great characteristic of the Pell grant award is that the money awarded does not necessarily have to be applied to college tuition. Any expense that can be seen to be necessary to obtaining an education, can be covered by the grant money. It must be remembered that this program is not specifically catering to traditional students; it provides opportunity for traditional and non-traditional students alike. Just as welcome as a student who is fresh out of high school, are mothers who want to return to college to earn a degree. Consideration is given equally to mothers who would like to stay home and take care of their children while doing online courses, to potential students who would prefer to go to a small community college. The most important thing is that all willing students are able to earn a degree that will provide them with significant opportunity in the job market. An effort by the current administration to show that education truly is the key to a bright future are by offering Obama grants. With the allocation of a significant amount of money to pay for education, everyone from young adults to working mothers has a chance to go to college.

Consideration is given equally to mothers who would like to stay home and take care of their children while taking online courses, as it is to potential students who would prefer to go to a small community college. The most important thing is that all willing students are able to earn a degree that will provide them with significant opportunity in the job market. Obama grants are an effort by the current administration to show that education truly is the key to a bright future. Everyone from young adults to working mothers has a chance to go to college, with the allocation of a significant amount of money to pay for education.

The purpose of federal grants can be seen in many cases to help disadvantaged groups to attend college. The federal Pell grant is a commonly given endowment for low-income students. Since the Obama administration has stated that it places a high priority on education, the benefits of Pell grants have been augmented to be a greater help to potential students. In particular, working moms are especially encouraged to apply for the Scholarships for Moms program, which is just a title given to a portion of the standard Pell grant program. The administration believes that by equipping low-income mothers to earn a degree, this will provide a stimulus to the lagging economy, and be a great benefit to families of those mothers as it will in turn increase their earning power in the work force. $5,000 from a Pell grant may not seem like a lot of money, when you look at the high cost of education these days, but it could help defray the other expenses associated with going to college. As well as books and supplies, a student has additional expenses of housing and travel as well.

For a single mom, other miscellaneous expenses may also include childcare. One great advantage of the Pell grant award is that the money awarded does not necessarily have to be applied to college tuition. On condition that any expense that can be seen to be necessary to obtaining an education, can be covered by the grant money. In conclusion, this program doesnA†t cater specifically to traditional students. It provides opportunity for traditional and non-traditional students alike. Any mothers who want to return to college to earn a degree are just as welcome as a student who is fresh out of high school. Consideration is given equally to potential students who would prefer to go to a small community college as well as mothers who would like to stay home and take care of their children while taking online courses. All willing students are able to earn a degree that will provide them with significant opportunity in the job market, and this is the most crucial factor. Obama grants are purely an effort by the current administration to show that education truly is the key to a bright future. By allocating a significant amount of money to pay for education, everyone from working mothers to young adults has a chance to go to college.

Are you desperately in need of money to continue your education having known that it will help you a lot in your endeavor to find employment with better income? As a mom, it is your responsibility to provide the needs of your family especially your kids. And you can do this by having enough income to sustain their needs. Employment is the common source of income by many but not all jobs bring enough salary especially for those who have their own families. You will be able to choose what kind of job you would want to engage with and at the same time will give you enough money to sustain your personal and your family’s needs. Getting an education to advance in your career is easier said than done. It’s because ample amount of money is needed to be able to finish college education. Not only to pay for the school tuition fee but to pay form education materials needed for your schooling. For those who live far from the university or college, they even need additional money to pay for their lodging. True enough that not everyone is blessed to have such privileged. There are several ways wherein you can find financial aid to help you pursue with your education.

There are scholarships offered by different organizations both public and private. There are also those that offer student loans. One of the most popular scholarship being offered today especially for moms is the scholarship program initiated by President Obama to help mothers who are in need. Together with the Federal Pell grant who has been active for several years giving financial assistance to low income student, the program was being implemented and monitored well to make sure they are able to carry out the objectives of the program. The government believe that education can help these mothers fight poverty by being able to earn a degree and have a profitable job as a professional. Everyone is aware of the big difference attached when you talk about someone who was able to earn a college degree and one who wasn’t when it comes to employment. There are far better opportunities for those moms who are able to finish college that is why do not waste the chance. The government is offering free education for moms who want to make significant changes to their lives.

Barack Obama’s administration has a new campaign that encourages moms to go back to school. The US government is now offering scholarship grants to mothers who wish to complete their education and earn a degree. Many moms may not be aware of this new policy so now is the best time to learn more about this program and take advantage of it. Although the economy may be suffering from a recession at the moment, this is no reason to postpone going back to school and completing your education. If you are a mom, you should know that this is the best time to earn a degree so that when the job market bounces back, then you will be fully equipped to take on a new career and use your degree. Here are some of the policies introduced under Obama’s term that encourages mothers to go back to school and pursue higher education: Federal Pell Grants The Federal Pell Grant Program provides grants to low-income undergraduate and postgraduate students. It aims to promote access to higher education for everybody. Students can use this grant on more than 5,400 participating postsecondary institutions. In one of Obama’s first bills, the Federal Pell Grant was increased from $4050 to $5100; this is a great opportunity to not miss for single mothers who wish to get a baccalaureate or post baccalaureate degree. In order to apply for this grant, you first choose a degree then an institution that offers it. Once you are all set then you need to fill out and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

With the new simplified process, FAFSA can now be completed and submitted online, this is very helpful for busy working moms who can now apply for grants while at the comforts of their home. Tax Benefits The American Opportunity Tax Credit is a tax benefit that is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 under Obama’s administration. According to it, Moms can credit their tuition and other school related expenses against their total tax liability. Up to 40% of the credit is refundable so mothers can really benefit from the savings. Online Study Grants Aside from the grants and tax benefits mentioned above that moms can use to support their education, there are also several scholarship grants available online. Studying online has become a trend these days especially for single moms or busy working mothers who have no time or have limited resources to leave their children to baby sitters while they go out and attend school elsewhere. This is why earning your degree through distance education and online programs are highly recommended. There are scholarships and grants made just for moms wishing to complete their degree that offer a lot more than the Federal Pell Grants. These financial aids are accessible online through several websites and search engines
