The beautiful weather is bringing out locals and visitors to Lower Town’s Home & Gallery Tours this evening and tomorrow afternoon. Today the homes and galleries are open for the tour from 6 – 9 pm and tomorrow from 2 – 5 pm.

Tickets are $10 per person and cover you for both days. They will be available for sale the week of April 25 – 30 at the Texaco Station in Lower Town, corner of North 7th St. & Madison, at Etc. Coffee Shop on North 6th in LowerTown and at Bryerpatch Studio, 502 North 5th St. HOMES 1. Victor and Teresa Bopp – 333 North Seventh Street. Built in 1897 by the Wallerstein brothers, founders of a well-known Paducah mercantile company, the Colonial is now in its third century. One of a handful of Lower Town buildings that has been continually maintained and retains its original look, it was always an apartment building until 2006, when Sharon Graves had it remodeled into six modern condominiums. She retained the charm of such amenities as the wood paneling and brick walls with arches over the windows, the French doors to the front porches and pocket doors. Of special interest is the slate sign on the wall of the back porch that lists the six original tenants, which has remained intact for 114 years. Please exit through the rear door and porch.

2. BiLan Liao and Matt McDermott – 524 North Seventh Street. “BiLan’s Studio” is the home of international fine artist BiLan Liao. BiLan is originally from Hunan, China, and currently directs the painting program at the new Paducah School of Art. Not only does she paint at home, but the walls of her newly constructed bungalow style home are adorned with many of her best known works.

3. Dee Felts and Lee King – 514 North Sixth Street. This structure was originally built circa 1880-1890, and is an example of Eastlake style decoration. This is a style of decorative houses much like a Queen Anne, rather than classified as an architectural style. Lee and Dee bought the house in January of 2006; started renovating the structure in April 2007, converting a multi-unit apartment building into a single-family residence. It was in the 1950s and 60s that the original house was divided into five apartment units and for many years simply known as: “the Blue Rose.” The dining room floor is believed to be original as are much of the interior woodwork and transoms.

4. Paul and Monica Bilak – 502 North Sixth Street. The Mary Jane home was built in 1873 by Mr. Loeb from Ohio. In 1879, it was purchased by Mary Jane and James Bondurant; thus the name “Mary Jane.” The house is a simple Italianate. In the late 1950s, the structure was sectioned off into four separate apartments. In 2003, the home was restored back to a single family dwelling using a close approximation of the original floor plan from 1873.

5. Yvonne Harris – 414 North Sixth Street. This three-story home was built in the 1890s. Miss Harris purchased the house through the Artist Relocation Program, and in collaboration with Sonny Ridgeway, spent 2 ½ years renovating and reviving the property. They were able to salvage, reuse and restore most of the interior’s wood trim, interior doors and baseboards. The interior is painted in sunny colors that reflect Miss Harris’ sparkling personality. Antique furnishings reflect her desire to honor her ancestors.

6. The Smedley-Yeiser Home – 533 Madison Street. The Smedley-Yeiser Home is a wonderful example of Greek Revival style constructed between 1856 and 1873. It is known as the Smedley-Yeiser Home because it was built by wharf boat captain and commissioned merchant William Smedley, and at the turn of the 20th century, was owned and occupied by Paducah Mayor David Yeiser. The house is currently owned by the Paducah Renaissance Alliance, Paducah’s local Main Street organization. The Alliance is looking for a buyer/owner who will rehabilitate the house with its great architectural details, and create a business there that would in some way compliment the Historical Arts District.

7. Johanna & Allan Rhodes – 320 North Sixth Street – Etcetera Coffee House. Many will think the building that houses Etcetera Coffee Shop and Gallery as well as the Rhodes’ upstairs living space is historic although it is only five years old. The brick exterior echoes the design of many other structures in Lower town. You will find an exciting collection of Lower town art in the Rhodes’ home upstairs as well as a delightful array of student art in the coffee shop/gallery on the first floor.

8. The Former Home of Ms. Louise Randle – 304 North Sixth Street. Now referred to as “The Belle Louise”. The Belle Louise is an antebellum home which was first occupied and owned by Confederate Lt. Daniel Fraser, who fought under Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest’s command during “The War Between The States”. The antebellum home was added to in 1879. Vice President Barkley, President Truman’s VP, was laid out in the house for viewing during the period of time when it served as a funeral home. It is now owned by Brent Dukes, known locally as “The Colonel”. He hopes to open the house as an inn in the near future.

9. Rodney and Sidney Wright – 509 North Fourth Street. Architect Rodney Wright designed and built this “21st Century shotgun house” in 2006. The Wrights have been incorporating environmentally efficient concepts into their designs since 1973. Their house reflects a healthful, comfortable environment that is also energy efficient. It has been profiled on Local 6 as one of the area’s truly “green homes”. See how they have incorporated energy saving techniques into a home that is both beautiful and functional.

10. Jim and May Louise Zumwalt – 621 Monroe Street. This structure was built in 1900 in a modest Queen Anne style. It is known as “the Honeymoon Cottage” because it was built by I.W. Boswell as a wedding gift for his daughter. The house was restored and updated by Louise Randle in 1990. The house retains many of its historic features on the ground floor including wood flooring, mantels and chandeliers in the front rooms which are original to the house. Also remaining are the original pocket doors in the front room.

11. Andy and Gayle Kaler – 318 North Ninth Street. The Queen Anne home of Andy and Gayle Kaler at 318 N 9th Street, was built at the turn of the century as a home for the daughter and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace who lived across the Street. The house was converted to apartments in the late 1930s, soon after the 1937 flood in Paducah. Andy and Gayle Kaler purchased the house in 2003 and lovingly restored the house as it is today. GALLERIES A. Studio Mars – 420 North Seventh Street. Studio Mars is the working studio of artist Paul Lorenz…a place for exploring drawing and painting, media and chemistry, composition and consequence. Designed by both Paul and Louis Lovera, the studio and attached house were designed while in France where Paul was participating in the 2002 Paris Triennial. Construction started in 2003 with occupancy commencing in the Autumn of 2004. Studio Mars is also an annex gallery space for the Paducah Arts Alliance.

B. Canvas Room Fine Art Supplies – 719 Madison Street. This structure although recently constructed displays all the charm of a late 1800′s Victorian home. Canvas Room Fine Art Supplies offers the professional and student artist a wide assortment of canvases, watercolors, acrylics, oils pigments, ceramics, pastels and textile art supplies. Jonathan and Cynthia Hobson have also added an outdoor kinetic wind sculpture, of a paintbrush and palette installed in the front yard.

C. Leaping Trout Studio – 723 Madison Street. Artist Keyth Kahrs formerly of Tucson, Arizona paints representational subject matter in acrylics and watercolors. The great outdoors, lakes and streams figure prominently in his work, with a cool color palette utilized. The studio and gallery are housed on the first floor in a two-story four-columned structure originally built in the late 1850s, making it one of the earliest homes built in the neighborhood. Leaping Trout Studio opened officially in November of 2004.

D. Gallery 5 – 803 Madison Street. Artist Bill Renzulli works in a variety of mediums. In his gallery one can find traditional and contemporary landscapes in acrylic, watercolor and pastel; urban and architectural landscapes, abstract clay monotype prints, and mixed media constructions along with pen and ink drawings. The gallery and studio are a newly constructed addition to the fire-gutted main house on the corner of N. 8th St. and Madison St., renovated in 2002. Gallery 5 opened its doors in November of 2002.

E. Judeen’s Art Studio – 720 Harrison Street. Enjoy a colorful adventure in Judeen’s Art Studio & Gallery where the walls and tables are covered with art quilts, paintings, rugs, felt pieces, ceramics, stained glass and photography. Most of the artwork has been done by artist Judeen, formerly from Corpus Christi, Texas. Equine photography is by well known, world traveling equine photo journalist Merri Melde, Judeen’s sister. Besides a gallery full of arts and crafts, there is a moving sale going on consisting of books, art supplies, yarns, glass, and much, much more. The gallery was completed in July, 2005 with must see acid stained concrete floors.

Specializing in owner/jeweler Julie Shaw designs, Julie exhibits in galleries throughout the United States and Canada. The focus of Aphrodite Gallery is on the Wearable, with many other jewelers, scarves, and purses all made by American artists. Also representing Mark Palmer’s artwork, Mark is a former resident of Lower Town, Paducah. Come see the new look of Aphrodite Gallery.

G. Terra Cottage Ceramics – 514 North Seventh Street. This structure was slated for demolition when the Terra family came along and fell in love with the house. This building is a fine example of a 2 story brick shotgun style, and first appeared on City maps in 1888. A (converted) 4 apartment layout was renovated/converted back to a single family residence, which includes a sculpture studio, gallery and Kookie Bar on the first floor.
Students who attended Manchester protest say they had grants revoked and fear violent reprisals against families

The government of Bahrain is putting intense pressure on the families of students in Britain who were photographed attending a peaceful protest in Manchester in solidarity with the country’s pro-democracy movement.

The gulf kingdom has stripped government-funded scholarships from those who attended the event outside the BBC building last month, the students say, and told parents to order their children home.

Students involved have told the Guardian they have “strong and well-founded” fears that they and their families could suffer beatings and torture as a result of the Bahrain government’s crackdown on the protest 3,000 miles away and that they are likely to be arrested on their return.

“My mother was crying when she called me,” said Rashad, whose attendance at the protest was his first such political action. “She said they are going to arrest you and that scared me. I told her I didn’t do anything wrong but she said she was worried about my safety. They said I should come back to Bahrain, but we can’t go back home. We will be arrested and disappeared. It has happened to others and I fear we are going to be tortured. We want the British government to protect us.”

The students, who used pseudonyms to protect their families, said at least nine people studying in Manchester, Huddersfield, Newcastle, Reading and London had seen their £850 a month subsistence grants removed and had been told their tuition payments would be axed. Some said they had been made homeless as a result of the cuts and were considering requesting asylum in the UK when their student visas expire.

Sulieman, another student who said his scholarship had been revoked, said the ministry of education in Bahrain called his father to order him home a couple of days after the protest, in a pattern repeated for many of the protesters. “My father asked how they knew I was there and they said they had video footage and pictures,” he said. “They told him I must come back, but I am not going back.”

The students believe some of the images were taken by Bahraini or Saudi “spies” alerted to the event on Facebook. The demonstration was disrupted by interventions from supporters of the regime and some people whom protesters identified as being from Saudi Arabia.

Some of the families have also received visits from the Bahraini authorities, according to Amin Elwassila, an Arab activist in Manchester who is supporting the group.

“It seems very strange that every time something happens here in Britain there is a repercussion there,” he said. “Some of them started receiving phone calls from their families telling them that the Bahrain government had contacted them telling them they will be removing their scholarships and that on their return to Bahrain the students will be questioned by the authorities. They were all very frightened. Some of the families were receiving regular visits. Not all families of Bahraini students were contacted, just those who had been on the demonstration.”

The Bahraini embassy in London declined to comment on the claims of government’s sanctions against students and forwarded inquiries about the withdrawal of scholarships to the cultural attache, who did not return calls.

On Friday night a further solidarity protest was scheduled at the same location, but all of the Bahraini students the Guardian spoke to said they were too afraid to go.

The sanctions against the students come amid increasing international concern at Bahrain’s treatment of dissenters. The British government has raised with Bahrain’s interior minister the deaths of four dissidents in the last week, three of whom were in police custody.

Next Thursday, Catherine Ashton, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, will travel to Bahrain after calling for the immediate release of all those detained for expressing themselves.

Zainab al-Khawaja, a 27-year-old mother, will on Saturday enter the sixth day of a hunger strike in protest at the arrest and beating of her father, the human rights activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, and her husband and brother-in-law. Her US-based sister, Maryam al-Khawaja, said she was now very weak and dizzy and her family want her to go to hospital. She is resisting partly because the hospitals are said to be in the control of Bahrain’s military.
